The acropolis of Sami
On the site of the present settlement, remains of habitation from the Early Helladic period have been found. On the hill of Kranis in Agios Theodoroi, remains of a Mycenaean settlement have been found. In the Geometric period, the beginnings of a city-state can be traced. Ancient Sami was one of the four city-states of Kefalonia (the others were Kranis, Pronnoi and Pali) and controlled the eastern part of the island. Like the other cities of the island, it was autonomous and minted its own currency. On its two natural fortified positions, two hills to the east of the modern settlement, was the fortified acropolis and the classical city, which is built in large squares. The fortifications survive to this day and are a typical example of fortifications of the classical and Hellenistic periods. The foundations of a building that has been identified as a temple are found at Alpovouni.
Sami was conquered after a siege in 188 BC by the Romans, who thus conquered all of Kefalonia. During Roman times, Sami flourished again. The port was moved to Loutra and fortified. Public buildings, bath facilities, public works and luxurious private residences with mosaics were constructed in Sami. Rich and impressive finds come from its four cemeteries. Rakospito, which was probably a bathhouse, survives from that period. The city declined and was finally abandoned due to pirate raids during the 5th and 6th centuries AD and earthquakes. The coastal settlement reappeared in the 18th century under the name "Riva tis Samos".
