Svoronata is a quiet village in southwestern Kefalonia, 9 km from Argostoli and very close to the resort of Lassi. Although known for its proximity to the airport, it is peaceful and picturesque, ideal for a peaceful holiday. It was named after Colonel Svoron, who fought in Macedonia in 1912. It is one of the few villages in Kefalonia where you can admire the traditional architecture just as it was before the devastating earthquake of 1953. The area is quite flat, ideal for long walks along the serpentine and narrow streets. Take an early evening stroll and enjoy the colourful gardens with the beautiful smells of all kinds of flowers. Svoronata has seen tourist development, but the place has retained its past glory and traditional identity. Thus, you will find elements of the old art of the local blacksmiths. The village is in the best spot if you want to explore the rest of the island, as it is quite central.
Argostoli is just twenty minutes by car or bus. The buses run daily from the capital city to the neighbouring villages. In Svoronata, there are a few mini-markets to serve your basic needs as well as traditional tavernas on the waterfront, which serve delicious seafood. Svoronata offers many accommodation options, including many new resorts. The nearest beaches are Ammes, Ai-Helis and Avithos. Most of these are sandy beaches with fairly shallow waters, ideal for families. Apart from Avithos, which is slowly losing its sand and some parts of the beach are covered with large stones and pebbles, the rest of the beaches have soft, golden sand. There are basic facilities such as small canteens, some sunbeds and umbrellas at Avithos and Ammes, while Ai-Helis is a smaller beach, in a secluded cove, ideal for water sports and beach volleyball. Next to Ai-Heli are the so-called gold fields, because of the gold that some locals found there after the Second World War and became rich. It is worth visiting Lord Byron's Rock in Lakithra, it is a place where he used to go in search of inspiration for his poems, because of the serene landscape and the stunning view of the Ionian Sea and Zakynthos. In the church at Svoronata, which is the largest on the island, you can admire beautiful frescoes.
